Scaling Reuse with Big Data

Building component and material reuse is still largely organized around individual projects, where information about existing buildings and materials is collected case by case. Scaling reuse from individual projects to building stocks, cities, and regions requires a better understanding of the existing built environment at a much larger scale.

Increasing amounts of building-related data are becoming available through building registries, cadastral and GIS databases, digital models, architectural drawings, remote sensing, street-view imagery, and other sources. However, the availability, quality, resolution, and accessibility of these data vary substantially between countries and regions.

The workshop focuses on the data gap between what we currently know about existing buildings at scale and what we need to know to enable reuse. At the same time, it provides a platform for participants to share available data sources, methods, and practical experiences from different contexts, learn from each other, and build connections for potential future collaboration.
